Dire wolves, a species that disappeared over 12,000 years ago, have been reportedly brought back to life using advanced gene-editing and cloning techniques. Capitalizing on popular fascination stirred by the depiction of these creatures in HBO’s Game of Thrones, the company claims these pups as the world's first "successfully de-extincted" animals.

The process involved reconstructing the complete genome of the dire wolf using genetic material obtained from fossilized remains. This effort has resulted in the creation of three pups exhibiting features characteristic of dire wolves, such as distinct white coats and thicker fur. Despite these claims, there is skepticism within the scientific community regarding the extent to which gene-editing technology can replicate entire extinct species.

Critics argue that while genome sequencing and component modification can be achieved, reviving extinct species may still be beyond current technological capabilities. There is debate over the significance of creating slightly altered wolves and whether these efforts can justifiably be labeled as successful de-extinction. The modifications, they suggest, might lead to only minor genetic variations in existing species, rather than a true recreation of the extinct dire wolf.

Using genetic material from two dire wolf fossils, the company was able to reconstruct the complete dire wolf genome, ultimately creating cubs with distinctive dire wolf features like white coats and longer, thicker fur. While Colossal claims to have brought this iconic species back to life, critics say that gene editing technology is still a long way off from being able to revive extinct species, and question whether the efforts are worth the benefits. We don't have the technology to modify entire genomes. We can modify components of genomes, and we can certainly sequence genomes. So, yes, they have slightly genetically modified wolves, maybe. Does that make it a dire wolf? No. Does it make a slightly modified gray wolf? Yes. And that's probably about it.

It was not clear if Hamas’ statement meant it had accepted the proposal from US President Donald Trump for a 60-day ceasefire.
