The fire burning in Chance Harbour on Bonavista Bay has grown a lot. It's now more than 1,200 hectares in size, the largest active fire in the province, only one day after it started. A big blanket of smoke hangs over the area today, but with a lot more hot weather on the way, fire officials are worried. They're bracing for extreme fire behaviour. The one piece of good news, the winds are pushing it away from communities. It's burning in a northeast direction, away from any communities, headed towards the salt water, hopefully, where it ends up. Flames have already destroyed some cabins along the shoreline. People are out in boats, keeping an eye on the fire, reporting back which cabins are safe and which ones are gone, with nothing they can do to help. It's speechless. I grew up out there growing up, just going out there in boats, out to my aunt and uncle's cabin, friend's cabin, all turning coals. What can you say? You're watching it all burn. There's nothing you can do. A provincial ban on open fires is in effect, with hot, dry weather expected. Fire officials don't want to have to divert resources away from this fire to fight new ones.
