The country will go to the polls tomorrow in an historic referendum that will determine if Indigenous people are recognised in the country’s constitution through a new parliamentary advisory board. The Prime Minister has spent the day delivering a final pitch to voters.

Final day of campaigning ahead of tomorrow’s referendum

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese began the day in Adelaide and then travelled to Hobart, which shows, as we've been hearing throughout this referendum campaign, that South Australia and Tasmania are proving to be key states in the vote. And that's because, for it to be successful, the referendum needs a double majority. So we're talking about a majority of voters across the country, but also a majority of voters in at least four of the six states, and that excludes the territories. Now, if successful, a voice to Parliament would recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Constitution through a voice, which would act as a body providing advice to Government and Parliament on issues affecting First Nations people. And speaking in Adelaide today, the Prime Minister says if the country votes yes, we can wake up on Sunday morning feeling better about ourselves. And he also says it's the chance to make a difference for the most disadvantaged people in the country. Take a listen to his pitch today. Thinking of others costs nothing. This is a time where Australians have that opportunity to show the generosity of spirit that I see in the Australian character, where at the worst of times, we always see the best of the Australian character. I hope we see that tomorrow. I hope we see that generosity. And I call upon my fellow Australians to vote yes tomorrow. Now, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has also been travelling around the country throughout this six-week official campaign period. He is advocating for a no vote and says that will bring a sense of relief to the country. In one of his final interviews today ahead of the referendum, he's criticised the lack of detail in the proposal, which, of course, the Government has refuted and says the detail is something that Parliament would later work out if the voice was successful in a referendum. But here's Peter Dutton speaking earlier today. I know that it's a rejection, not of Indigenous people, not of a burning desire to do good for Indigenous Australians. It's a rejection of the model put forward unwisely by the Prime Minister and the campaign conducted in such a way that he's been able to turn 65% support, which was the initial reaction, into something much less than that. So Evelyn, how many people have already voted and what can we expect tomorrow? Well, the AEC, the Australian Electoral Commission, this morning said that around five million Australians have already voted. But while millions have voted, millions are still to vote and the polls, of course, will be open until 6pm tomorrow. Now, we haven't had a referendum in Australia for more than 20 years, but there will be some similarities, I suppose, to what people can expect when they head to their voting booth tomorrow. Of course, they'll just be writing yes or no on the ballot paper, but there will still be people likely handing out pamphlets. There'll be democracy sausages on offer in some places as well, in around 7,000 polling places around the country. And so, as I said, the polls close at 6pm tomorrow in each territory or each state, so it'll be slightly different depending on the time zones, but that will bring to the end six weeks of campaigning and then the vote will start to be counted, Jo.
