Three French women including a niece of notorious jihadist propagandists went on trial on Monday, accused of traveling to the Middle East to join the Islamic State group and taking their eight children with them.

Three women, Christine Allain, Jennifer Klein, and Maëlène Duhart, are standing trial in a Paris court specializing in terrorism cases. The women, all from the same family, are accused of leaving France between 2014 and 2017 to live under the Islamic State group in Syria, where their husbands and relatives were involved in the group's propaganda activities and claimed responsibility for attacks in France.

According to pretrial judges, the women knowingly joined and remained with the Islamic State group. After the fall of Raqqa, they spent two years in hiding before being arrested by Turkish authorities and extradited to France. All three face charges of association with terrorists, while two are also charged with abandoning their children by bringing them into a conflict zone. They face potential sentences of up to 30 years in prison.

It is here, in Paris's special courtroom for terrorism cases, that three women are standing trial. Christine Allain, Jennifer Klein, and Maëlène Duhart. They are all members of the same family, one where radical Islam reigned and was passed down from generation to generation. Between 2014 and 2017, all three chose to leave France, to live in Syria under the Islamic State group. Their husbands, and for Jennifer Klein, her cousins, were part of the terrorist group. They, Jean-Michel and Fabien Klein, were responsible for its propaganda, and they claimed responsibility for the November 13th attacks in France. According to pretrial judges, this is not a case of unknowingly following family members and getting stuck under the thumb of the Islamic State group. Rather, in their pretrial review, the judges said the women went to Syria and remained there knowing full well of the caliphate. With the fall of Raqqa, they, like the Islamic State group, retreated. And for two years, they were on the run and living in hiding in refugee camps, before finally being arrested by Turkish police in 2019 and extradited to France. All three women are standing trial for association with terrorists. And two, Mayalen Duar and Jennifer Klein, are also charged with moral and material abandonment of their children, or voluntarily bringing nine children in total into a war zone to join a terrorist group. They risk 30 years behind bars.
