Federal workers in Washington, D.C. and surrounding areas are seeking help from food banks as the government shutdown extends into its fourth week. At a distribution center in Alexandria, Virginia, hundreds of federal employees lined up for food assistance after missing their first full paycheck. The shutdown has also raised concerns about the potential expiration of SNAP benefits for millions of Americans, which could further strain food banks. Lawmakers are under pressure to resolve funding for both federal worker pay and food assistance programs, as many affected individuals are now dipping into savings or seeking part-time work.

Federal workers turn to food banks as shutdown drags on

Pain is building in Washington, D.C. as the government shutdown enters week four, with food banks now opening up distribution just for government workers. Emily Wilkins joins us with that story. Emily. Hey, Mike. Well, we are here at one of these distribution centers in Alexandria, Virginia. It is home to just some of the two million federal employees who are missing their first full paycheck today. You know, they haven't even started handing out the boxes yet already. We've got a huge line of cars going to the street. They're expecting to serve about 300 people today at this location. And it's just one of several locations this week where they have been handing out boxes of food to federal workers and federal employees. No sign yet of exactly when this shutdown will end, now that we are on day 24. And in addition, it's not just federal workers. SNAP benefits, needed food assistance, that is set to run out on November 1st for 42 million Americans, also potentially going to harm a lot of the food banks and add to a lot of the supply. This is putting pressure on lawmakers. Listen to what Senator Roger Marshall told us yesterday. I do have a lot of concern about the SNAP. WIC program is very important to my practice. You know, lots of pregnant women, breastfeeding women use that program as well. I think it's a good pressure point for them. Senators have told me that they're trying to find ways forward on funding SNAP, on funding pay for federal workers. But folks in this line and others have told us that they are already dipping into savings, looking for part-time work. And it's clear that a lot of the pain of the shutdown that might have not been felt the first two weeks is now really being felt here in D.C. and elsewhere across the country. Carl.
