Former Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygaard on Sunday was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault by a Toronto jury, according to CBC News. The 82-year-old was on trial for five counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement, linked to incidents between the 1980s and mid-2000s. Over the six-week trial, the five complainants testified Nygaard attacked them in the private bedroom suite of his downtown Toronto office building. He was acquitted of the fifth count of sexual assault and the count of forcible confinement. Nygaard's lawyer did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Born in Finland, Nygaard grew up in Canada, eventually running his namesake clothing companies and becoming one of the country's wealthiest people. Canadian police arrested Nygaard in late 2020 at the request of the United States, where he was accused of using his businesses to lure women and girls to sexually gratify himself and his associates. Toronto police laid their own charges against him a year later. Nygaard also faces charges of sexual assault and forcible confinement in Manitoba and Quebec. CBC News reported he is fighting extradition to the U.S., where he faces charges in New York for nine offenses, including conspiracy to commit racketeering, transportation of a minor for purpose of prostitution, and sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion.

The death toll from rains in Brazil's southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul rose to 57, local authorities said on Saturday (May 4) afternoon, while dozens still have not been accounted for.
