A mother has filed a lawsuit in Lake County Court against Zion Benton Township High School, a student, and the student's mother after her 17-year-old daughter was stabbed multiple times in a math class. The incident, which occurred on January 9, resulted in the teen losing a kidney and suffering both physical and psychological trauma. 

The lawsuit alleges the school district failed to follow its own safety policies and did not intervene despite warning signs about the attacker. The accused student has been charged in juvenile court, and the family is seeking restitution for medical expenses. The injured teen has returned to school and is focusing on her recovery and graduation.

Don this was a very traumatizing experience for the girl and her family as well. That lawsuit was filed today in Lake County Court. The teen's mother filed charges not just against the school but against the alleged attacker and her mother as well. We spoke with the family's attorney today. They tell us that the school failed to protect the girl. This is a trauma she's never gonna outlive. According to a lawsuit filed today in Lake County, a mother is suing Zion Benton Township High School. A student and her mother after her daughter was stabbed in class. She was stabbed multiple times in her math class, was taken by ambulance to Condell Hospital and had emergency surgery to save her life and in the end she lost her kidney. The complaint alleges another student stabbed the 17 year old multiple times in math class on January 9th. Sean Burke, the family attorney, says the teen lost a kidney and has suffered both physical and emotional trauma. She's working with one kidney now where healthy human beings have two and that comes with a lot of risks that she's going to have to live with for the rest of her life. In addition, you've got the psychological trauma of being attacked, stabbed multiple times in a classroom and she's going to have to live with that. The lawsuit claims the district failed to follow its own safety policies including keeping classroom doors locked, allowing a student with a known history of violence to enter and allegedly stab the 17 year old. Burke says the district ignored warning signs, failed to intervene during a confrontation and should have placed the student in an alternative program. What we're hoping the outcome is twofold. First, we want to make sure that this never happens to any other student again. When a parent sends their kid to school, the thing they expect above all else is that their child is going to be safe. The school district in this case had procedures, safety rules in place to make that happen and they weren't followed and that's why we're here tonight. The teen accused has been charged in juvenile court. The stabbing, for the stabbing, the family is asking for restitution for medical expenses. We did reach out to both the district and the school for a statement and for comment. We have not heard back from them yet. Well how is the teen doing and do they know each other before this? Yeah, I mean all things considered she's doing well now. She is back in school and she's focused on finishing high school in May and she's also focused on her future. She says attorneys tell us that they've received a lot of support from the community and attorneys couldn't really go into it but they did tell us that aside from them just being in the same class they didn't really know each other.
