Quick action by a zookeeper, who applied a tourniquet using a leather belt, is credited with saving her life. The woman has undergone two emergency surgeries and is in stable condition at Princess Alexandra Hospital. Workplace Health and Safety is investigating the incident, and compliance notices have been issued to the zoo as it reopens.

The 80-year-old's relative, a schoolteacher from New South Wales, was visiting the zoo at the weekend. She's a keen photographer and was near the enclosure watching her sister Stephanie clean it from an area off-limits to visitors when she was bitten. It was all over in a split second. It was that quick that we could only surmise at this stage. The best we can come up with at this stage is the lion was just playing. Now how she was playing with a human in that circumstance is yet to be determined. The woman in her 50s remains at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. She's undergone two emergency surgeries. Her arm has been lost, but a keeper saved her life. She did save her life. She actually took my wife's leather belt off and applied a tourniquet. In medical terms, she's described as being in stable condition. Emotionally, both her and my wife are on a roller coaster. It's the great unknown at the moment. Also unknown, how such an incident could happen. The woman wasn't inside the enclosure, but no one saw the bite happen and she's still heavily sedated. So we haven't really pressed for answers as to what she was doing and how this happened. Workplace Health and Safety is still investigating, but inspectors have issued a number of compliance notices to the business as the zoo reopens.
