Israel's military offensive in Gaza City has forced hundreds of thousands of more than 330,000 Palestinians to flee to the south of the Strip since August. But families who can't afford it, or have no way of leaving, remain trapped in northern Gaza.

Gaza City, once filled with displaced families, has become largely deserted following an intensified Israeli ground operation. While many Palestinians have fled south, some families remain trapped due to financial hardship and concerns about the safety and conditions in designated 'safe zones.' 

Residents describe being unable to afford the cost of relocation and lacking support from humanitarian organizations, which have largely ceased operations in the area. Those remaining face daily uncertainty, limited access to aid, and ongoing insecurity as the conflict continues.

It was once a city of tents, full of displaced families. Now following Israel's push to seize full control of Gaza City, it has become almost empty and silent. But despite Israel's ground operation forcing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to flee south, others have little choice but to stay. Ikram Dallul is a mother of five. Her family cannot leave the city because what Israel calls safe zones are anything but. I left my house at Al Zaytoun neighborhood. Now I live in northern Gaza, near al-Saraya. I've had a very difficult life. I didn't go to the south this time because of the lack of money. It would cost me around $1,200. I also didn't move to the south because I have no relatives. And based on my previous experience, life is not easy in the south at all. I am trying my best to entertain my children and help them draw pictures and play together when possible. Abu Jihad Barda, a displaced father, says he's trapped by the coast of his cave, stripped of support after humanitarian NGOs pulled out. He says his family, like many others, has been left to survive alone in Gaza City. My family consists of six people. The Israeli army told us to move to the south. This seems to be impossible for us to leave because we don't have any money. We need to spend more than $1,000 for transportation. Most of the aid organizations are not operating in Gaza, and the most we can get is one meal for all of us each day. As sun sets over Gaza City, the streets fall quiet. Most families fled south, but some remain here forced by circumstances with no way to leave and nowhere else to go.
