Marketplace found recycled polyester products selling at top retailers across the country. This is 100% recycled poly. The website actually says you're buying this and it's better for the earth. Oh my God. This sustainable fashion expert says there's a big problem with the recycled polyester Some of fashion's big brands are pushing. Recycled polyester isn't made from old clothes at all. Most of it is made from used plastic bottles. If you're using plastic bottles, you're actually taking bottles out of a potentially closed-loop recycling system and then giving them a one-way ticket to landfill disposal. Canadians generate about 500 million kilograms of textile waste every year. That's enough to fill about 15,000 trucks like that. Scientists-turned-advocate Linda Greer says turning plastic bottles into clothes won't help make a dent in the mountains of fashion waste the world produces each year. What we really need is we need to go clothing to clothing recycling. Currently, less than 1% of the world's fashion waste is recycled in the truest sense of the word. It takes time and is expensive. So just to be clear, no one is actually taking old clothes and turning them into new ones. No one is doing clothing recycling at scale. Definitely. H&M, The Gap and Lululemon all told Marketplace they're exploring new technologies and that more work needs to be done to find truly sustainable solutions. Until then, Linda has a simple one.
