As the April 15 tax filing deadline draws near, experts are warning of a significant increase in tax-related scams, many of which are leveraging artificial intelligence to appear more convincing. Cybersecurity professionals and financial institutions report a rise in impersonation scams, fake websites, and fraudulent voice calls targeting taxpayers, particularly those who are stressed or seeking online assistance.

Officials advise the public to be cautious about sharing personal information, avoid clicking on unsolicited links, and be wary of anyone requesting payment via cryptocurrency, wire transfer, or gift cards. The IRS emphasizes that it primarily communicates by mail and rarely contacts taxpayers through email, phone, or social media. Experts also note a notable increase in scams targeting Gen Z due to their higher online activity.

The deadline to file your taxes is quickly approaching. It's now less than two weeks away. And as we get closer to that April 15th date, officials tell us they're tracking an increase in scammers tape of a 28 report. Larissa Scott spoke with the security cyber security expert about this. He's in studio now with us to give us some tips on what to watch out for. Good morning, Larissa. Hey, D. A. Good morning to you. We know that tax season can be stressful this time of year, trying to file and pay on time while making sure that everything is accurate. It's a lot. And scammers, they're preying on that, hoping to catch you with your guard down, especially with the use of A. I. Now, that's why experts tell me you need to be more alert than ever before. We've been talking to people in our community for a while about the increase in online scams. I have received them multiple times now, with the tax deadline quickly approaching, experts tell me even more scammers are on the prowl tax season. We can also see a huge increase in scams. That's Yasmin Rivera with G. T. E. Financial. I sat down with her to talk about this year's tax season and how to protect yourself. You really want to be aware what's going on. I also spoke with Abhishek Karnik, who heads threatened research intelligence for cyber security company McAfee, about what he's been seeing. He says A. I. Impersonation scams are on the rise and that the use of A. I. Has increased the believability of these scams, making them that much harder to detect. Impersonated websites have been on the rise. Also have been, you know, those voice calls some people have been getting. He tells me more people than ever are also turning to A. I. For help with filing their taxes, but they need to be careful. You have to be a little cautious there because you don't want to upload your sensitive information. The I. R. S. Says you should be on alert for refund scams right now. If someone's promising you a big payday, watch out. Look for scams involving charities where someone's trying to get you to donate, claiming it's for a tax break. Don't click on any links that are sent to you. Go to websites directly. Be weary of anyone asking you for your personal information. Anytime the financial institution is asking for your personal information, you really want to pause and be careful to not give that information out. If someone's asking you for payment in crypto wire transfer or gift cards, that's likely a scammer. The I. R. S. Will never accept these kinds of payments. Officials say impersonators will also threaten you to pay now or else you should immediately end communication with them. Look at any signs of urgency, creation of panic, anything which tells you that you're gonna face arrest now or you need to pay urgently. Lastly, if you prefer to file your taxes in person with a tax professional, do your research on them and verify that they're who they say they are. Try to work with some agencies that you're familiar with, you know, that you trust. Now, experts tell me there's also been a big increase in Gen Z getting scammed during tax season because they tend to be online more now. Remember, the I. R. S. Mostly contacts you by mail delivered by the U. S. Postal Service and will never reach out to you on social media. It's also unlikely that you'd get an email, phone call or text from the I. R. S. D.
