The Ghanem family are among some 32,000 Palestinians estimated to have been forced out of their homes in West Bank refugee camps by Israel's military last year. They have been living in a rickety one-room shack with a thin metal roof. And things have worsened since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, exposing the Israeli-occupied West Bank to falling debris as Israel's interceptors take out Iranian missiles. Madeline Ghanem says her children are terrified by the sound of the rockets, which fly overhead almost daily. We don't have shelters. The space where we stay is the same space we hide in. There are no shelters and no place to run to. Hundreds of pieces of missile debris have fallen on the West Bank since the start of the war, according to Palestinian rescue services. Four Palestinian women were killed last month when a missile hit the West Bank. Ghanem misses their old three-story house, where she lived with her husband's extended family, despite it being in a refugee encampment. Their shack now doesn't even have a proper kitchen or bathroom. This is the family's second displacement. Ghanem's father-in-law ended up in the Tolkan refugee camp after fleeing the 1948 war that accompanied the creation of Israel. He now lives with his daughters in a small rented room. One of them, Arij, recalls the day they were forced out from the family home. She says Israeli soldiers broke in without warning in the middle of the night. So much suffering, she says. We didn't take clothes, nothing at all. She says their father, who can't walk, had to be dragged out. In early 2025, during a brief truce in fighting with Hamas in Gaza, Israeli forces began demolishing homes and roadways in three longstanding West Bank refugee camps, Tolkan, Nir Shams and Jenin. Israel said it was to stop militants from exploiting civilian infrastructure. A Human Rights Watch report called the expulsions war crimes and crimes against humanity. The Israeli military did not respond to a request for comment on the Ghanem's case. Though they now live about an hour's walk apart, the family tries to gather each week. In dreams of reuniting the whole family under one roof, her husband, Ibrahim, is bracing for worse to come. We expect everything, he says. They kicked us out of the refugee camp, so it's very possible that they'll kick us out of the West Bank.
