816 Dispensary has become Missouri’s first cannabis micro-dispensary, marking a significant milestone for the state's cannabis industry. The business is operated by Jimmy Poe, who was previously convicted for selling marijuana but now enters the legal market through a state social equity program. 

Missouri's micro-business initiative is designed to give individuals affected by previous marijuana laws and those without significant financial resources a chance to participate in the legal cannabis industry. The state plans to issue more micro-licenses in the future, broadening access to this growing sector.

And today was the grand opening for one local business, 816 Dispensary. The business made history by making the first cannabis micro-business sale in Missouri. Tonight KSHB 41's political reporter Charlie Keegan looks back at that program that made all of this possible. Think of your micro-dispensary as kind of like your micro-brewery. The product's a little bit more hand-crafted than what you get from the big guys. It's going to be really good and it's going to blow up the Missouri cannabis industry. Jimmy Poe never thought he'd be in the Missouri cannabis industry. In 2006 he was convicted of a felony for selling marijuana. He spent more than a year in prison and made a promise to his now wife. I promise I'll never sell marijuana again and here we are 19 years later and I'm selling cannabis again to the public, legally, you know, so it's definitely crazy. Missouri designed the micro-business concept as a social equity program. It's supposed to give people hurt by marijuana or without access to those big bucks a chance to enter this now legal industry. It's kind of created a whole different category of owners and operators that now have access to participate in the industry and be a part of this amazing thriving industry we have here in Missouri. Poe cut the ribbon at 816 Dispensary on 816 Day, August 16th. But this moment has been years in the making. He showed me his vision for the empty space last year and even predicted his first sale. The day we open the door and that first customer comes walking through, I think that's the time where it's just going to be like, oh my God. So how does it feel to open as Missouri's first micro-dispensary? I'm still trying to catch up to the hype. Missouri has plans to issue more micro-licenses moving forward.
