A shooting occurred at Fort Stewart, Georgia, where Sergeant Quantavious Radford allegedly brought a personal handgun onto the base and opened fire, injuring five fellow soldiers. Other soldiers intervened quickly to subdue the suspect, preventing further harm. 

All five wounded soldiers are reported to be in stable condition and are expected to recover. Radford, who has served in the Army for over seven years without combat deployments, is now in pretrial custody. The Army is investigating how he was able to bring a personal weapon onto the base, and it was revealed that Radford had a prior DUI arrest that his commanders were unaware of. The Defense Secretary has condemned the attack and promised swift justice.

Everything we know about the Fort Stewart shooting

We begin tonight with that shocking attack at an Army base, a sergeant accused of opening fire on five fellow officers. It happened today at Fort Stewart in Georgia, just 45 minutes southwest of Savannah. CBS Pentagon reporter Eleanor Watson has been tracking this developing story. She joins us now from Washington. So, Ellie, what more do we know about what happened here? The Army has identified the suspect as Sergeant Quantavious Radford, a noncommissioned officer who his commander says brought a weapon, a personal weapon, onto the base and into his workplace. Five of his fellow soldiers were wounded, but other soldiers quickly stepped in and subdued him before there were any other injuries. According to President Trump, President Trump said tonight that two of the five soldiers were very, very seriously hurt. The Army says, though, that all five are in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery. According to his Army service record, Sergeant Radford has been in the military for over seven years, has had no combat deployments and is assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Stewart. Army investigators interviewed him this morning. He's now in pretrial custody awaiting charges. Secretary Hegseth, the defense secretary, in a statement tonight called the shooting cowardly and promised swift justice for the perpetrator. So, Ellie, for a guy to just bring his personal weapon onto the base, it leads you to wonder what kind of security are we talking about here that he just penetrated? There is tight security at the gates of all military bases to prevent just anyone from driving on. But this sergeant did have a military ID, and car searches are not standard procedure, so once he passed the gate, he was essentially inside the wire. The Army did say today that he did not use a military weapon, but potentially a personal handgun, and that will be part of the investigation into how he was able to get that weapon onto the base and into his workplace. The military investigation has already discovered that back in May, just three months ago, he was arrested by local police for a DUI. His commanders did not know about that arrest until today, and that will factor into questions about what led up to today's shooting, as investigators try to piece together a motive.
