On today's episode of Everyday ER, we're going to talk about concussions. A concussion is really a fancy way of saying a brain injury, and it relates to all the signs and symptoms that we see with that brain injury. I would say the most common misconception about concussions is that it only occurs with a hit to the head, but there are a lot of other things that can move the body in an aggressive way and cause jostling of the brain in the skull that can also cause concussions. The most common symptoms of concussion are headache, dizziness, and confusion. The important thing to remember is that those symptoms can occur minutes to several hours after the injury occurs. It's important to recognize those as signs of a concussion and to think about getting medical attention. The most important thing to do when you think you have a concussion is to stop doing what you're doing. It's very enticing to want to go back on the field and play, especially if you're doing well, but that's the wrong thing to do. Having a second head injury right after a first head injury can potentially be catastrophic. Do an assessment and think about the symptoms that you have. A severe or worsening headache, vomiting more than once, having a seizure, being confused, you're wobbling on your feet, having trouble seeing, or if your symptoms are getting significantly worse, it's important to go into the ER right away.
