The Novelis recycling plant in Saxony-Anhalt, the largest aluminum recycler in Europe, is experiencing significant challenges due to increased gas and electricity prices following the war on Iran. Despite the high energy requirements, recycling aluminum remains more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than producing new aluminum from bauxite, using 95% less energy and emitting 95% less emissions.

However, the industry is also facing a shortage of aluminum scrap, as export restrictions from countries like China and annual losses of 1.3 million tons in Europe put additional strain on operations. These factors are putting mounting pressure on the plant and the wider European aluminum recycling sector.

In this furnace, aluminum scrap is melted at around 700 degrees Celsius. Hundreds of tons of the shiny liquid metal flow into molds and come out as huge aluminum ingots. The novelest recycling plant in Saxony-Anhalt is the largest in Europe and the second largest in the world. 400,000 tons of aluminum scrap are melted here every year. But these furnaces are heated with gas, and gas and electricity prices have surged since the war on Iran. Electricity prices are about twice as high as in some regions of the world. Gas prices are also twice as high, sometimes even much higher after the crisis. But despite the high energy consumption, recycling is still much cheaper than producing primary aluminum from bauxite. When using scrap, we have 95% less energy use and 95% less emissions than when using aluminum bauxite. What increases the pressure even more on the industry is that scrap is disappearing. China and other countries restrict exports, while Europe loses 1.3 million tons every year.
