In the midst of a trade war with the U.S., the European Commission imposed two fines on the digital giants and closed two cases against them which fell under its digital regulation.

The European Commission has imposed fines on major technology companies, Apple and Meta, for not adhering to the European Union's digital regulations. Apple faces a fine of 500 million euros for restricting app developers from directing consumers to more affordable alternatives outside of its App Store. Meanwhile, Meta has been fined 200 million euros for compelling users to either view advertisements or pay to avoid them.

The penalties are part of the EU's effort to enforce the Digital Market Act, a regulation designed to ensure fair competition among digital businesses. European Commissioner Teresa Ribeiro emphasized the importance of this law in maintaining a level playing field, pointing out that both companies failed to comply and instead reinforced consumer dependence on their platforms.

Apple has announced plans to challenge the decision, arguing that the European Commission's actions could jeopardize user privacy and force them to share their technology without compensation. Meta has been approached for a comment but has yet to issue a response.

Meta has been contacted for a comment but has not yet responded with a statement.
