Valentine Brown and Rhonda Collard-Spratt are respected elders in their community, but they say they've been rattled at the way they were treated while heading out to vote in the voice referendum. There was no explanation whatsoever with that woman there. She just simply said straight forward, you're not allowed to have this on while you're here. Uncle Valentine was wearing a yes shirt when he was turned away. He says when he returned, polling agents followed him as he cast his vote. He was there right beside me, walking with me, and then he was looking down at the computer, you know, and making sure my name come up. Aunty Rhonda had similar issues. Because I was wearing this shirt, and he said to me, while you're in this space, and with that shirt on, you had better behave yourself. We are well respected elders. We were there to do our legal obligation to place our votes, and we were treated with utter disrespect. The Australian Electoral Commission says it's aware of the incidents. The AEC is encouraging voters to not wear political shirts or items of clothing when they come to vote. It's because of a federal law that bans campaigning within six metres of a polling booth. But experts are concerned it could cause issues. At election time, the only people who wear such material are party activists, and they know the rules. But with a community referendum, it's a bit tougher if people turn up, especially in a hot climate, and they're only wearing a T-shirt. While the AEC says it wants to create a positive experience for voters, for Uncle Valentine and Aunty Rhonda, it's been anything but.
