The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry has reported that at least 86 people were killed while trying to reach food aid locations in Gaza, marking the deadliest day for those seeking assistance during the ongoing conflict with Israel. The United Nations World Food Program sent 25 trucks of food into Gaza, where large crowds of civilians reportedly came under gunfire. 

Israeli defense forces stated they fired to remove an immediate threat to their troops and denied deliberately targeting humanitarian aid trucks. Incidents at aid distribution points have become frequent, with additional deaths reported at other centers due to gunfire and crowd crushes. The United Nations estimates that two million people in Gaza are facing starvation, and international calls have been made to protect civilians and end the violence.

The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry says at least 86 people were killed today while trying to reach food locations across the besieged territory, making this the deadliest day yet for those seeking aid in more than 21 months of war with Israel. CBS's Lee Kennery at our London bureau is tracking the latest developments. Good evening. The United Nations World Food Program drove 25 trucks carrying food into Gaza. They said they encountered massive crowds of hungry civilians that came under gunfire. Dozens were killed, and a CBS News team inside Gaza said Israeli tanks began shooting at the crowd as they waited for aid. Israeli defense forces said they fired in order to remove an immediate threat to their forces in the area, and that they do not deliberately act against humanitarian aid trucks. Video of the aftermath appears to show men and boys in control of some of the aid trucks, some being used to carry the injured to hospitals. Israel is disputing the death toll, but what is clear, every day Gazans are risking their lives to get food. Deadly incidents at aid points have become a regular occurrence. Just yesterday, the Hamas-led Palestinian Health Ministry said 34 Gazans were killed at a distribution center. That one is run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, the US and Israeli-backed organization that's been operating since May, employing armed guards. But it's not just bullets they come up against. A campede at a GHF location earlier this week killed 20. The crush of thousands of people facing chronic food shortages. The United Nations say two million people are being starved. And Pope Leo, in his Sunday address, called for an end to the barbarity of this war, Errol, appealing to the international community to protect civilians and observe the prohibition of, quote, collective punishment.
