Sudan reported that at least 41 people have been killed in the shelling of El Fashir, which is the last major city in Darfur under government control. Sudan’s civil war has been ongoing for two years, with tens of thousands of citizens killed.

The conflict in Sudan has intensified with recent shelling in El Fashir, resulting in significant casualties. According to the Sudanese army, at least 41 civilians lost their lives during an attack that was reportedly initiated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The city of El Fashir remains under the control of the government and is the last major urban area in the Darfur region not held by the RSF.

The Sudanese military has stated that over 600 RSF fighters were killed in the recent fighting, along with the destruction of more than 25 vehicles and the death of a senior RSF commander. However, these figures have not been independently confirmed. Furthermore, the army has accused the RSF of targeting residential areas, leading to further civilian casualties, particularly affecting women and children.

Since the beginning of the civil war between the Sudanese army and the RSF in April 2023, there have been numerous accusations of both factions targeting civilians. The situation has led to reports of tens of thousands of civilian deaths and mass displacement. The conflict around El Fashir is part of a broader pattern of violence in the region, with international organizations warning that continued escalation poses a risk of widespread instability in Darfur.



Dozens killed in El Fashir as Sudan conflict intensifies

The Sudanese army says it's repelled a large-scale attack by the Rapid Support Forces, which began on Monday in El Fashir, the last major city in the Darfur region not in the hands of the RSF. In a statement posted to its official channels, the military claims more than 600 RSF fighters were killed in those attacks and over 25 vehicles destroyed. It also reported the death of a senior RSF commander. These claims have not been independently verified and the RSF has not yet responded publicly. The army has also accused the RSF of shelling residential areas on Monday night, killing at least 41 civilians, including many women and children. This is not the first time that civilians have got caught in the crossfire. Since the war broke out between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in April of 2023, both sides have been accused of specifically targeting civilians. Earlier this month, the RSF claimed control of Zamzam refugee camp, located about 15 kilometres from El Fashir, after very heavy fighting. The UN says at least 400 civilians were killed there and nearly 400,000 people displaced. El Fashir has seen repeated clashes since May of last year. Despite international warnings that a full-scale battle could destabilise the entire Darfur region.

It was not clear if Hamas’ statement meant it had accepted the proposal from US President Donald Trump for a 60-day ceasefire.
