Women's rights activists in India say the sexual assaults depicted in the video happened nearly three months ago, but hadn't surfaced because of an internet blackout by the Indian government. This what is happening in Manipur has been hidden from the world. What you're seeing is just a tip of an iceberg. During that time, there have been reports of shootings, homes being burned to the ground, along with other serious crimes. This Indian scholar says when governments don't deal with escalating conflicts, women often suffer. Women symbolize the honor of their communities and gender-based violence takes place on their bodies as a consequence. So they bear, they're the bearers of inter-community conflicts. India has seen several high-profile cases of gender-based violence. And yet, last year, men convicted in a gang rape of a pregnant woman were released from prison. Despite systemic patriarchy in India, some argue women are fighting back and demanding answers. There is a series of accountability measures which needs to be taken. What was the state government doing? What was the police doing? So Christine, what are authorities doing about the men in that video? There was an intense spotlight on this case today, Ian. Members of India's Supreme Court said they were deeply disturbed by what they saw in the video, and they're demanding answers, saying if the Indian government doesn't act, the courts will. In the video, the faces of several perpetrators are clearly visible. Today, Indian police said they made one arrest and that there will be a full investigation.
