Denver Mayor Mike Johnson has introduced a revised city budget following months of negotiations with City Council members and city department leaders. The updated proposal restores nearly $3 million to the city's rental assistance program, increases funding for immigrant legal services, and allocates $600,000 to reinstate an online parking ticket dispute system.

Despite these additions, some requests remain unmet. The City Clerk's office received an $800,000 increase, but Clerk Paul Lopez states this is still $2.7 million short of what is needed for upcoming elections. Other council requests, such as funding for crisis response teams, a work program for people experiencing homelessness, and expansion of the STAR program, were not included. A public hearing on the revised budget is scheduled, with a final decision expected soon.

And this morning we're getting a closer look at Denver Mayor Mike Johnson's newest budget proposal and we're also seeing some notable changes that could impact you whether you live in Denver or not. Now Denver 7's Maggie Bryan is joining us live from the city and county building and Maggie the new revisions to the budget come after months of some back-and-forth between the mayor and City Council members. Yeah Dan and Anusha this has really been a group effort like you said between City Council members the mayor and the leaders of each city department who've had to make decisions on where they can cut costs. Now Mayor Mike Johnson says this proposed budget is a solution to what he calls the most challenging fiscal year since COVID and the Great Recession. He says he did add funding for several programs that were going to be cut now that includes adding nearly three million dollars for the city's rental assistance program and a $125,000 increase for immigrant legal services. He also plans to add $600,000 to restore an online parking ticket dispute system after it had been cut because of costs. Now that forced drivers to have to schedule a court date to dispute a parking ticket instead of having city staff just review those disputes online. Now the proposal also adds $800,000 to the clerk and recorder's office but City Clerk Paul Lopez says that's still not enough. In an interview he told Denver 7 the original budget had cuts that could force some ballot boxes and polling centers to close and now in a statement sent last night Lopez says the mayor's final proposal is still 2.7 million dollars short of what is needed to hold two high-profile elections next year. Now several other funding requests from City Council did not make it in this proposed budget. Those include restoring crisis response team positions at the Denver Sheriff Department, funding for a work program for those experiencing homelessness and then expanding the STAR program.
