Denver International Airport (DIA) has been recognized for having the greenest airport vehicle fleet in the United States. Over the past decade, the airport has transitioned much of its fleet of more than 1,200 vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG), hybrid, and more recently, electric vehicles. 

Officials at DIA say the shift to electric pickups, SUVs, cargo vans, and street sweepers has reduced emissions and maintenance costs, while maintaining operational efficiency. Although not all vehicles can be converted due to current technological limitations, the airport aims to eventually operate a fully green fleet as advancements allow.

And hey, just recently, Denver International Airport recognized for having the greenest airport fleet in the nation. Well, our Ethan Carlson went to talk to officials about the changes they've made in the last decade to be more environmentally conscious. I'm in DIA's massive maintenance facility, where they're making a big push towards sustainability. So this is our customer service area. This is where customers come, drop off their vehicles. Stephen Ritchie oversees the maintenance fleet of over 1,200 of those vehicles from 15 City of Denver departments that operate at DIA. We have a full staff of folks that do nothing but scheduling and planning. It takes a lot of coordination and organization to keep things moving seamlessly. All those vehicles can produce a ton of emissions, but the team here has been working hard to reduce their carbon footprint for years. We originally started about a decade ago, mostly with the CNG, hybrids, things like that. About five years ago, as technology got better, we started moving into the electric market. Electric vehicles like pickups, SUVs, cargo vans, and street sweepers that can go surprisingly quick. Why would this thing need to go 45 miles an hour? Just to transport from site to site. It doesn't sweep at 45 miles an hour. This is an electric charging station, and these barriers are made entirely of recycled tires. These are just two small parts in why DIA's fleet was named the greenest in the nation. We've been able to prove that operations can still perform at a high level while being responsible and kind of lead the industry in that area. Now it's not possible for their entire fleet to be sustainable quite yet. I mean, look how big this thing is. The technology just isn't there quite yet. But when it is, DIA's ready. Our goal is to become 100% green fleet eventually. As technology allows, that's where we're headed. And Richie says these vehicles are super dependable, even in cold Colorado winters. They're very reliable, and the maintenance is a lot less cost to maintain an electric vehicle over a traditional gas engine vehicle.
