Turning back to Texas, CBS News correspondent Nidhi Cavazos joins us now with more on the proposed redistricting there and the backlash in some blue states. Nidhi, very good to see you. What are the governors in California and New York proposing in response to what's happening in Texas? Nancy, both California and New York have promised that they will be fighting fire with fire and they have vowed that they will be redistricting. So we know that this is going to start soon in California and New York and if we focus on California for example, Governor Gavin Newsom just a few moments ago confirmed that there are currently ongoing discussions taking place with the state legislator that is essentially tasked with coming up with these maps. Now we know that in the state of California the process might look different, it gets a little more complicated because there is an independent commission, but the state legislator and sources who are familiar with these ongoing discussions tell CBS News that these maps are almost done and these drafts will soon be made public. And Nidhi, Texas Republicans, they want to vote on their new map in a special legislative session. How is that process different to what plays out in California and in New York? For starters, Texas does not have an independent commission that oversees this process. They hand it off to their state legislator and they approve it and take care of it. But that's not necessarily the case with California or New York and that's essentially why it gets more complicated. These states like California and New York do have an independent commission and this commission is tasked with, at least the intent is to provide non-partisan maps. So in California for example, Governor Gavin Newsom has said that his promise is going to be fulfilled, that California will be redistricted, but this is also going to be going through the independent commission here and a special election will be called on November 4th and essentially it's voters who will have the final say here. We're seeing all the different kinds of controversy that's playing out over this, but what are the implications of this kind of tit for tat redistricting that we're seeing play out? What we can essentially see here is what we saw in 2022. We're going to have multiple legal battles and if we stick to just 2025 alone, we have critical deadlines that are coming up in Texas. For example, the deadline to file is early December. So these maps have to be approved in order for these members to or any candidate to file to run for Congress.
