The 1960s were certainly a turbulent time across the country and right here in Chicago as well. And today, some of that history is being remembered and preserved with the creation of a Black Panther Party heritage trail. All power to the people! Former Congressman Bobby Rush helps unveil a historical plaque today, marking the 1968 site of the Black Panther Party's headquarters in Chicago and Madison and Western on the near west side. And to dedicate this historical marker so that future generations will never forget the warriors who walked these streets with purpose, vision, and courage. It's one of a dozen historical markers that will be put up across the state, marking sites relating to Black Panther history. Chicago is sacred ground in the story of Black liberation. This is where Chairman Fred Hampton taught us that power rests in the people. The Black Panther Party was a Black power political organization founded in the Oakland area in the 1960s with chapters across the country, including notably here in Chicago. In 1969, the FBI and Chicago police conducted a controversial raid on the Chicago home of Panther leader Fred Hampton, killing Hampton and Panther guard Mark Clark. The spirit of Fred Hampton still lives. At today's ceremony, former Panther Minister of Defense Bobby Rush talked about the political movement that gave birth to the Panthers. It wasn't just about leadership. It was about those who dedicated their lives and their futures and some of their families to make the dream and the goals of the Black Panther Party a reality. The Black Panther Party fell victim to infighting and violence in the early 1980s, but some of the social programs it started in the Black community continue today. When I think about food programs or health programs, those are the things that not only help keep our communities alive, but it was such a good idea that the government stole their ideas from us, turned around, did the same thing, but with far less money and far less impact. Now the other historical markers are going up throughout the Chicago area, and one is going up in Peoria, Illinois.
