The evidence, collected in 1974, was recently re-examined using advanced DNA technology, providing the final proof needed to resolve the case.

Family members expressed gratitude for the closure, noting that Bundy's confession before his 1989 execution was previously insufficient to close the case. Officials believe the DNA profile may assist in solving other unsolved cases involving Bundy, whose crimes continue to impact families and investigators.

We now have definitive evidence proving that Theodore Ted Bundy murdered Laura. And we can announce that this case is officially closed. For over five decades, Laura and Amy's family has had to live with not knowing for certain who killed their daughter. But thanks to advances in DNA testing, evidence from 1974 has now yielded an answer, definitively linking Ted Bundy to the crime. We were really close. On Wednesday, Amy's sister spoke for the family. It's really quite amazing that people even are still interested in Laura's case. But I appreciate it. I really appreciate the evidence team. Bundy gained widespread notoriety through a string of gruesome murders of young women in the 1970s. He didn't look like anybody's notion of somebody who would tear apart young girls. His life and crimes the subject of documentaries and films. Just before his 1989 execution, Bundy admitted to murdering Amy, which brought the family some relief at the time. I'm just glad it's over. Investigators said the confession alone was not enough to close the case. Utah officials now say they believe the DNA profile in this case will help solve other cases involving Bundy. Now because of new technology and the ability to test very small bits of DNA, we were able to run that through a database and make a conclusive match to Ted Bundy, allowing the family and everyone else to have finality when it comes to this tragedy. And the key here is that hopefully that DNA profile they pulled could help others find some closure as well. Ted Bundy was put to death in 1989. And it's remarkable how the murders by a man considered one of the country's most prolific serial killers continue to reverberate.
