Remote communities across Australia debate are debating whether the proposed Voice to Parliament will improve the lives of Indigenous people. In WA’s northernmost town residents say they're looking to a future beyond what they call government handouts.

A once bustling hub, now a shadow of its frontier past. Wyndham is a dying town, and literally my people are dying too as well. Indigenous people make up half the population. The scars of the stolen generation and segregation run deep. These traditional owners are looking forward to the referendum. For them, it's all about being heard. Now the big problem here in Wyndham is jobs, work, there's hardly anything. Government funded activities help steer young people away from trouble. It keeps them off the streets, you know they've got a place to go after school, they've got a place to go at night. I really like it, it has very nice people. A local Indigenous organisation, WIAC, runs these programs, but it believes the bigger picture is job creation. Its workshop operates at a loss without government funding, providing a much needed service and supporting young people who are struggling to find jobs. I like what I'm doing, it's always the case, you always want a job that you love doing. The CEO wants to eventually wean the organisation off government funding and become a sustainable job creating operation. He hopes The Voice helps tailor policies and programs for Wyndham with that goal in mind. Don't just do diversion programs, get the economy running. My board has made it very clear, they do not want handouts, they want these boys and girls, the ladies and gentlemen in this town, to earn their keep. Views here on The Voice are varied. Some say it has to lead to positive outcomes, others are cynical, believing the government still won't listen. But many agree something has to change with Indigenous policies and programs if the community is to survive and thrive into the future. Down the road in Nine Mile Indigenous community, rundown infrastructure needs fixing. Traditional owners say there's an opportunity to train up young people. Hopefully when The Voice gets up, that this day will speak on our behalf to get this place maintained and, you know, running smoothly and get some things happening for our young people, 18 plus, to get some job out here. There are signs of positive change. Presidents say crime is dropping due to good relations with police. Leaders say these successes give them hope. Wyndham can become a sustainable and thriving place for the next generation. It'll be a great opportunity if The Voice got up and gave us the responsibility of this town, us Indigenous people.
