Madagascar's Beres Stadium, the site for the opening ceremony of the Indian Ocean Island Games, was the scene of jubilant fans cheering and waving flags. But outside, a stampede created a scene of mass chaos and death. The president of Madagascar, Andre Raiulina, who was inside the stadium when the stampede happened, called for a moment of silence as the show went on with fireworks and performances. Those looking for loved ones rushed to local hospitals. We have an 18-year-old child. As we had no news of our child, we went to the morgue, but they told us no one of that age had died. So we went to the emergency room to see if the child was among the injured. We came to the hospital and found my neighbor was dead. Now we're waiting for the papers so that the body can be taken out and we'll bring it home. My nephew was injured, but he pulled through. Prime Minister Christian Seh told those gathered at the hospital that the injured are getting the utmost care, and it was not immediately clear what caused the stampede. The Indian Ocean Island Games was created to champion competition between regional island nations and territories, like Mauritius, the Seychelles, and Comoros, to name a few.
