The cafe was known to be frequented by journalists, activists, and remote workers due to its internet access.

The United Nations has strongly condemned the ongoing military actions, calling the humanitarian situation in Gaza "dire" and highlighting the high number of civilian casualties, including over 400 people reportedly killed while seeking aid. The Israeli military has stated it is investigating allegations of targeting civilians, a move welcomed by the United States. Diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas continue, but have so far failed to yield results.

The continued collective punishment of the Palestinian people is unjustifiable. We remain deeply concerned by Israeli military operations in Gaza that render large areas of Gaza uninhabitable. While Israel maintains it is not fighting Palestinians but Hamas, it has been accused of deliberately targeting and shooting civilians who are trying to access aid. The UN says more than 400 Gazans have been killed while seeking assistance. The Israeli military is investigating the reports, a move welcomed by the US. There's still more to do. We recognize that Israel is doing the appropriate thing with investigating certain allegations and we certainly, like everyone else, will be watching that. And at the same time we also know that there are people on the ground who want to disrupt and disturb the success of this. The Trump administration is still trying to broker a deal between Israel and Hamas. The American president will likely push Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach a deal when he visits Washington next week. But talks between Israel and Hamas have repeatedly faltered. Hamas seeks guarantees for a permanent end to the war but that has long been a red line for Israel.

It was not clear if Hamas’ statement meant it had accepted the proposal from US President Donald Trump for a 60-day ceasefire.
