The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) continues its investigation into last week's midair collision near Washington, D.C., which resulted in multiple fatalities. Jennifer Homendy, the NTSB chair, provided updates during a recent briefing on Capitol Hill. Initial findings suggest that pilots of the Black Hawk helicopter involved in the crash were wearing night vision goggles at the time of the incident. Currently, crews are focused on recovering the crash wreckage from the Potomac River, aiming to complete the majority of this work in the coming days.

The recovery efforts involve extracting the Black Hawk helicopter, a part of the wing from the other aircraft, and additional significant pieces of debris. The NTSB is preparing to analyze these materials once they are removed from the water, with particular attention to the Black Hawk helicopter in an effort to understand the data retrieved prior to the crash. It is anticipated that investigation efforts by the NTSB could take up to a year to reach a conclusion.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and NTSB have presented their preliminary findings to Congress, outlining both the incident near Washington and another recent aviation incident in Philadelphia. Discussion points included potential safety concerns relating to air traffic around Reagan National Airport. The FAA had previously considered shutting down one of the airport's runways after several near-miss incidents last summer, although no action was taken. That decision has reignited discussions about the air congestion at Reagan National and the capacity for safe traffic management.



D.C. crews continue recovering wreckage from midair crash

While on Capitol Hill Thursday, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board gave a brief update on the investigation into last week's deadly mid-air collision near Washington. Jennifer Homendy says based on preliminary reports, she believes the pilots of the Black Hawk helicopter were wearing night vision goggles at the time of the crash. She also spoke about the status of the agency's investigation. Since we just pulled up the helicopter, it's gonna take us time to determine what's there. It's gonna take several days, maybe weeks. CBS News senior transportation correspondent Chris Van Cleave has the latest from Washington. The focus for salvage crews for the remainder of the week will be getting the rest of the wreckage out of the Potomac River. That includes the Black Hawk helicopter and a portion of the plane's wing, as well as any other large pieces of debris, wreckage that may have come down away from the primary spots where they've already pulled airplane pieces out of the water. They expect that to wrap up the principal work by the end of the week. You may see workers out on the water looking for additional pieces into next week. The National Transportation Safety Board, as those pieces of wreckage come ashore, will begin pouring over them. We know the safety board has said they need access to the Black Hawk helicopter to better understand some of the data that came out of the Black Hawks. Once the helicopter is out of the water and in a hangar, they'll be able to start that work. We also understand the NTSB and the FAA briefed Congress today. Not a surprise that legislators would want an update as to what we know about this mid-air collision, and probably the crash in Philadelphia as well, and what safety concerns or lessons may have already been learned about traffic around Washington's Reagan National Airport. CBS News has learned that the FAA weighed closing one of the runways at DCA last year after a couple of close calls last summer. Ultimately, the decision was made not to do that, but you're going to hear more talk now about how much congestion really is at that airport, and how much traffic can that airport and controllers safely handle. If changes need to be made, you may see fewer flights be allowed to take off and depart from Washington's Reagan National Airport. All of this will be part of a larger investigation, the NTSB probe, likely to take about a year. Back to you. Chris Van Cleef, thank you.
