Critical aid supplies to Sudan are being disrupted by the 'ripple effect' of the Iran war, the World Food Program (WFP) warned. While gas, oil and fertilizers are stuck in the Persian Gulf due to the war, urgent food aid destined to Sudan and other countries are facing severe delays, according to the UN agency for hunger emergencies.

Sudan is currently experiencing the world's largest hunger crisis, with 41 percent of its population facing acute food insecurity. The delivery of vital aid, including special nutritious foods for malnourished mothers and children, has been severely disrupted due to conflicts in the region and rising transport costs.

The war in Iran and threats from Yemen's Houthi rebels have made Sudan's Red Sea port a risky destination, forcing cargo ships to take longer, more expensive routes. As a result, the World Food Programme reports that 70,000 metric tonnes of food are either en route or stuck in ports, further complicating efforts to address the crisis.

This is where the world's largest hunger crisis is taking place. In Sudan, an estimated 41 percent of the population is facing acute food insecurity. And now, aid is becoming harder to come by for those 21 million people. Think of special nutritious foods required for Sudan, for our operation in Sudan, where mothers and children are malnourished and they need this vitamin and mineral enriched food. We produced this in Pakistan as one of the countries. That is now stuck there. The war in Iran has disrupted global supply chains and led to skyrocketing transport costs. On top of that, Sudan's Red Sea port has become a risky destination for ships carrying supplies from Asia. With Yemen's Houthi rebels threatening the Bab el-Mandeb strait, few are willing to take that route. Instead, cargoes would have to go all the way around Africa, then through the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal, or switch to road transport, a journey that adds many more weeks and hundreds of thousands of euros in additional costs. And that's not the end of it. Ports upstream are getting congested because vessels can't leave ports, then vessels can't berth into those ports, containers don't get offloaded, so containers remain stuck, and then containers are not available where we need them. This is how the global supply chain is being affected by this conflict. The World Food Programme says it currently has 70,000 metric tonnes of food that is either en route or stuck in ports due to the conflict in the Middle East.
