A recent FBI report reveals that crime rates in the United States declined in every major category in 2024 compared to the previous year. Violent crime dropped by 4.5%, with murder and manslaughter down nearly 15%, robbery down almost 9%, rape down about 5%, and aggravated assault down 3%. Property crimes and theft also saw decreases, although the report does not provide explanations for these trends.

The FBI noted an increase in the number of officers shot while on duty. The data is based on a voluntary survey of law enforcement agencies and is considered an estimate due to the lack of a uniform reporting system. Early statistics from the following year suggest the downward trend in crime may be continuing.

All right, we got some new data from the FBI today. A nationwide survey by the Bureau shows that crime across the U.S. is going down. CBS News correspondent Chanel Call has been digging through that number. Crime of all kinds, crime of the violent sort, property crimes, what are we talking about, Chanel? Yeah, that's a great question. Just finished looking through this 39-page report. The big headline read is crime decreased in every category last year. I wanna show you some numbers here just to paint a picture. Violent crime, according to this report, was down 4.5%. That was in 2024 compared with 2023. Murder and manslaughter decreased almost 15% year-over-year read. Robbery dropping by almost 9%. Rape saw a roughly 5% decrease. And aggravated assault also down about 3%. I'll note property crime and theft, those were also down read. Although the report didn't explain why we're seeing those decreases. Now, while most of this is good news, the FBI did say read that they have seen an increase in the number of officers who were shot in the line of duty. So that is noteworthy. And we should also note that this data was released by the FBI, but it is an estimate. That's because it's a voluntary survey of organizations and law enforcement agencies from across the country, but they don't have a really streamlined, uniform way of collecting information like this. It's also worth noting these numbers were captured during the Biden administration, but the Council on Criminal Justice is saying that stats that are available so far for this year read are showing this downward trend is continuing.
