The judge ruled that decades-old statements used as evidence were insufficient to prove guilt. 

The decision has prompted strong reactions from victims' groups, who argue it reflects ongoing protection for British soldiers over crimes committed during the Troubles. Despite the acquittal, a previous public inquiry found that British troops fired without warning on unarmed civilians, leading to an official government apology. Both British and Irish governments have endorsed plans for a new legacy commission to address unresolved deaths from the Troubles.

Bloody Sunday, January the 30th, 1972. Thirteen civilians were killed in full view of the public and the media when British Army troops opened fire on Irish nationalist demonstrators marching for their civil rights. It was the worst mass shooting in Northern Irish history and a seminal moment in the so-called Troubles, fuelling support for a united Ireland against the forces of the British state. Fifty-three years later, the only soldier ever to face trial for Bloody Sunday, known only as Soldier F, was found not guilty of the murders of Willie McKinney and James Ray and the attempted murders of five others. A Belfast judge found that decades-old statements used as evidence against him were insufficient to prove his guilt. Victims' groups expressed outrage at what they see as the continued protection of British soldiers over Troubles-era crimes. This is the end of the prosecution of Soldier F. He has been the most protected serial killer in British legal history. He has enjoyed every comfort that a victim should enjoy. Yet the failure of this prosecution does not obscure the facts, as established by a 12-year public inquiry concluding in 2010. It found that Parachute Regiment troops had fired without warning on fleeing civilians, contradicting army evidence of a violent threat that the inquiry found had been made up. It prompted an official apology. What happened on Bloody Sunday was both unjustified and unjustifiable. It was wrong. The case further complicates Northern Ireland's bitter legacy of violent crime and shattered community relations. Plans for a new legacy commission have been endorsed by both the British and Irish governments that could reinstate up to 33 outstanding inquests into Troubles-era deaths, bringing perhaps the pursuit of historic justice and reconciliation in Northern Ireland a step closer.
