Sub-Saharan Africa has seen its population of people over 60 increase by 50% in the past 15 years, reaching around 67 million. This growth is attributed to improved healthcare and lower child mortality rates. However, countries like Uganda are struggling to provide adequate support for their ageing populations, with limited pensions, minimal social safety nets, and insufficient medical care. 

Despite a cultural respect for elders, resources dedicated to elderly care remain scarce, and most support falls to families. The World Health Organization projects that the region's elderly population will reach 163 million by 2050, highlighting the urgent need for policy frameworks to address income, healthcare, and care for frail individuals.

It is very difficult place for people to grow old, especially I have now become old and I am starting to feel the challenges of growing old. While improvements in life expectancy are positive, as villages begin to fill with older people there is a dire shortage of support. Pensions and social safety nets are minimal, medical care is lacking and routine problems associated with age are often not addressed. This organisation is one of the few helping them. Seniors are not attractive, they are not sexy, they are not fancy. When you see them you see pain, you see suffering, you see a closed end of life. So there are not many non-profits helping elderly people. Respect for older people is deeply ingrained in African cultures, but even richer countries are having trouble meeting the needs of an ageing population. Pediatricians are increasing numbers day in and day out. We are graduating in pediatrics. But when it comes to the elderly, it's worse. They are disregarded. They just say these people they served and that's it. Now it's time to take care of them and in the normal section of our communities it's the family to take care of the elderly. So the country itself has not allocated a lot of resources to the elderly. A ministry nurse arrives to visit an 86-year-old man in a village about 90 minutes outside of Kampala. He's in pain and nearly blind, but she helps him as best as she can before rushing off to the many others she needs to see. Within the next 30, 40, 50 years there's going to be more than 10% of our population across Africa. For sure in Uganda it will be elderly people. So if you don't have a policy framework like a pension, for incomes, for healthcare access, for also caring for very frail people it's not going to be easy. And worryingly, even more dramatic growth awaits, with the World Health Organization projecting that there will be 163 million older people in the region by 2050.
