Leaders of Ukraine's coalition of the willing are vowing to step up military support and intensify sanctions against Russia. Britain is now urging fellow allies of Ukraine to reach a deal to allow it to access frozen Russian assets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with British Prime Minister Kyrstalmer and other leaders in London as part of the 'Coalition of the Willing' to discuss ongoing support for Ukraine. The coalition agreed to intensify economic sanctions on Russia and provide Ukraine with additional long-range missiles and air defences. 

While the US recently withheld certain military aid, it did impose new sanctions on Russia's oil industry. The European Union also announced a new package of sanctions, but there was no consensus on using frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's war effort. Zelensky continues to seek more concrete support as the focus of international discussions shifts from post-war planning to sustaining Ukraine's current defense.

'Coalition of the willing' meets to support Ukraine

Volodymyr Zelensky came to London after a week of highs and lows for the Ukrainian president and his closest European allies. He and British Prime Minister Kyrstalmer agreed that Russia's President Vladimir Putin shows no intention of ending the war. And in discussions among the so-called Coalition of the Willing, some in person, some via video link, it was agreed to step up economic pressure on Russia while keeping Ukraine in the fight with more long-range missiles and air defences. That meant keeping the pressure up, which hasn't always been the case. US President Donald Trump's decision a week ago to withhold long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles was a disappointment, though his decision to sanction Russia's oil industry came as a welcome surprise. And at a summit in Brussels on Thursday, there was a 19th package of EU sanctions on Russia, but no agreement to use frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine's war effort. All of which left Volodymyr Zelensky no doubt hoping this London encounter would amount to more than talk. The Coalition of the Willing, as this meeting will now become, used to talk about the day after the war, about ways of securing the peace. They're more interested now, it seems, in keeping Ukraine in the fight as the hopes of peace, it appears, recede. There were, as ever, strong words of support and ambition. And after his third meeting with King Charles this year, Zelensky is in no doubt of the esteem in which he and his country are held. But he needs a great deal more than that.
