Communist Party candidate Janet Jara, who's leading a center-left coalition, came in first, but by a disappointingly small margin. She warned Chileans that democracy will be at stake in a runoff next month. I will ensure that it will always be clear what it means for Chile's destiny to be led by the far-right wing versus the progressive forces in our country. Outside of the campaign headquarters of José Antonio Cast, who came in a close second, the atmosphere was euphoric. The far-right-wing candidate who lost the 2021 election to the current left-wing president is sounding like the ultimate winner. The runoff will be the most important election of our generation, a true referendum between two different models of society. One model that the current government leads, that has brought Chile to destruction, violence, hatred and economic stagnation. And the other one, ours, that promotes freedom, hope and progress. The results show that the majority of Chileans who voted for three different right-wing candidates are tired of traditional politics. Many say they want a leader who restores law and order amid rising crime. Chile has sunk too low. It's time for a radical change. José Antonio Cast represents a paradigm shift. Throughout his entire campaign, he has borrowed heavily from the style book of U.S. President Donald Trump. And in fact, it was he who, five years ago, founded this country's Republican Party, promising to, quote, make Chile great again. Jara represents continuity, and Cast, the first dramatic shift to the far-right since Chile returned to democracy 35 years ago. Two other conservative candidates, who between them obtained nearly 27% of votes, have already endorsed Cast, making it more likely that he will cross the finish line first in the second round on December 14.
