A childcare centre in Turramurra at Sydney's north shore has been torched in a targeted attack carried out under the cover of darkness. The newly-built centre says it is heartbroken but not shaken.

A recently opened child care centre in Turramurra was damaged in a deliberate arson attack that occurred outside of operating hours. The Play to Learn Early Learning Centre, which had been open for only six weeks, was targeted in the early morning, with evidence suggesting a car headrest may have been used as a weapon and accelerants present at the scene.

The fire activated the centre's sprinkler system, helping to contain the damage. At least a dozen families were temporarily displaced and had to make alternative child-minding arrangements. Surveillance footage has been provided to police, who are now investigating the incident. The centre's founder expressed confidence in the safety of the facility and looks forward to reopening once repairs are complete.

Forced to make alternate child-minding arrangements at short notice. We do have an operating service in Castle Hill. Whether there's an option we can use that for temporary, you know, accommodations. The blaze activating the internal sprinkler system throughout. The damage too contained by the concrete floors. Surveillance footage has been handed over to police. We're now on the hunt for anyone involved. I just hope that we find whoever's done this and that no other child care centres experience this. The Play to Learn founder says she has no concerns about safety when families return and looks forward to welcoming them back as soon as repairs are complete.
