Police say a nine-year-old girl simply playing in the park when she was hit and left for dead by an illegal dirt bike rider in Sydney's south-west. A manhunt is underway for the rider.

A nine-year-old girl named Elizabeth was seriously injured after being struck by a dirt bike while playing in a park in Rosemeadow, New South Wales. The rider, operating an unregistered bike, stopped briefly after the collision but left the scene without providing assistance. Elizabeth sustained significant injuries to her face and scalp and was taken to hospital in critical condition. Family members and bystanders provided initial first aid before emergency services arrived. Elizabeth has since undergone surgery and is recovering in hospital, with her family hopeful she will return home soon. Police are continuing their search for the rider and have urged him to come forward as investigations continue.

Ambulances rushed to a park where police say children had been just playing and having fun. Nine-year-old Elizabeth was hit by a dirt bike rider who had just been hooning through the park. She was left on the ground, injured and bleeding. The rider would know that he hit the little girl. He did stop briefly, had a really brief conversation and rode off without helping the young child. It's a very deep wound on the side of her face and on her scalp. Her auntie Brittany was the first adult on scene. Elizabeth's young friends all witnessed what happened. There was a number of family members, friends for that patient on scene. Their help and assistance was critical. They provided the first initial first aid to the little girl. She was just rolling down the hill. There was an adult out there. Mum, like we sent the kids down there, we always make sure there's an adult out there. Police say the man responsible was riding an unregistered bike across the park around 5.45 last night. Detectives today hunting for the rider. People ride them, but it's a really dangerous act to be riding around parklands where kids play sport, kids are playing in the long grass. So it's not a place for dirt bikes. Little Elizabeth was rushed to hospital with critical head injuries. I'm just glad it wasn't mine, a minor, younger. Because that would have been death for them, for like a three, four year old, which most of the kids in the street are. A traumatic memory for her and her friends. Michaela Fanto reporting there. She's live now at Westmead Children's Hospital where the little girl remains tonight. Michaela, how's she doing? Sandra, I've spoken to Elizabeth's mum and auntie this afternoon and they've told me she's recovering here in hospital after her surgery this morning. And they've told me she's in good spirits, asking for some food straight after her surgery. And they're hoping that she'll be able to return home with them tomorrow to recover there. As for the person responsible, well, police are still searching for him tonight and have asked him to hand himself in to police as they continue their investigations. All right, Michaela, thank you.
