Previously, individuals were advised to isolate for a period of five days, but the new guidance allows for an earlier return to work and regular activities. According to the CDC, this adjustment is applicable to those experiencing mild symptoms which are improving, provided they have been fever-free for at least one day without the use of fever-reducing medications.

This updated policy by the CDC reflects an evolving approach to handling COVID-19, aiming to balance public health needs with societal and economic considerations. It signifies a shift towards managing the virus in a way that acknowledges both the importance of reducing transmission and the practicalities of everyday life.

Doctors say with low COVID case counts and hospitalizations down, along with an ever-evolving virus and new treatments, it makes sense to look at COVID like we do with the flu or RSV. Dr. Rabia De La Torre says it's a way of pivoting, but still recommends being careful around others. For those next five days, they should take simple precautions like good hygiene, trying their best to keep the air that's around them purified, and simple measures to try to avoid getting other people sick. Those who are immunocompromised may want to wait longer, say health care experts. Some New Yorkers say they've been done quarantine for some time, but others not so fast. Just take care of yourself, lots of tea and soup. If you're sick, you should stay home. It's just like if you have the flu, you're going to stay home anyway. So whether it's five days or just don't don't show up if you're sick. And doctors share that same advice. In the end, these are just guidelines from the CDC, not rules. Those will be made by an individual's employer or your child's school based on state health guidelines. Some states have already relaxed their COVID rules prior to the CDC update, and with COVID numbers continuing on the downward trend, more states are expected to follow.
