Canada has pledged to spend billions on defence spurred on by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, but even with that increase won't achieve NATO's target of two per cent of GDP.

Canada has committed to significantly increasing its defense spending, inspired by the concerns following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This financial boost involves billions of dollars aimed at reinforcing the country's military capabilities. However, despite this uplift in defense budget, Canada will still fall short of meeting the NATO alliance's spending target. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) recommends its member countries to allocate a minimum of two percent of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP) towards defense, a benchmark Canada is not expected to reach even with the new investment.

Canada's military is due for an upgrade and Ottawa says it's ready to spend billions to do it. Today we are announcing our next commitment to our armed forces and to Canadian security. It makes 73 billion dollars worth of investments over the next 20 years. Much of that cash however comes down the road. In the short term, roughly 8.1 billion dollars will be invested over the next five years. This new strategy the result of a long-awaited defense review ordered two years ago after Russia invaded Ukraine. Ukrainian cities and infrastructure have been pounded by Russian missiles. To guard against that Canada will invest in early warning airborne surveillance planes. Canada also hopes to purchase a tactical missile system for the army similar to what the U.S. has given Ukraine. The policy puts a lot of focus on Canada's role in the Arctic a way to make it more politically palatable says this expert. It makes sense from the standpoint of trying to get money from parliament from the political system. This is what people want to hear. Canada has been under pressure from allies to increase defense spending to meet NATO's target of two percent of GDP. A statement by the U.S. ambassador to Canada says Washington is pleased with the progress so far. But this plan only gets the country to 1.76 percent by 2029 and that's if everything goes okay according to this defense expert. There is actually no articulated plan to get to two percent which I think our allies are going to be quite attuned to and it will not go unnoticed. Other experts agree and say Canada's business as usual approach such as taking two years to rewrite the defense strategy won't work anymore and in light of Ukraine the government will have to deliver on the commitments and swiftly.
