The election will decide the leadership of the country, which has a population of nearly 30 million and is a major producer of cocoa and oil, for the next seven years. According to the electoral code, candidates must submit their applications within 10 days of the electoral college being convened. 

President Biya, who has led the country since 1982 and is currently the world's oldest sitting head of state at 92, has not announced whether he will seek re-election. His main opponent, Maurice Camto, continues his campaign efforts despite frequent police interventions, including a recent incident where police blocked him from leaving his party headquarters to attend rallies.

The most recent incident occurred when he had just returned from campaigning abroad in Europe, where hundreds of police officers blocked him from leaving the party headquarters to hold a series of rallies in Douala.
