New South Wales Premier Chris Mins and the Federal Opposition have voiced strong support for an independent public inquiry, citing the need for a thorough understanding of the events and measures to prevent future tragedies.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has indicated he is not opposed to the idea and has requested a cross-departmental review, while also planning to reconvene Cabinet to address the issue. The Prime Minister will also attend a National Day of Reflection in Bondi, emphasizing the need for unity and non-partisan cooperation in response to the attack.

New South Wales Labor Premier Chris Mins pushing for an independent public inquiry, arguing the scale and seriousness of the atrocity warrants it. Until we've got a full and accurate picture of exactly how this happened, with a plan to ensure that it doesn't happen again, then I don't have answers to the people of New South Wales about what happened on Sunday. In recent years, we've had Royal Commissions into defence and veteran suicide, the Morrison Government's failed robodebt scheme, the banking sector and child sex abuse in the church. If we're not going to have a Royal Commission into this, when would you use the powers of that extraordinary provision in our acts? The Prime Minister isn't against the idea. I've asked the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet as well to give consideration to looking across departments. I'll have more to say about those issues. The Federal Opposition is also supporting calls for a Royal Commission into the attack, saying it is needed, but it's also doubling down, demanding Parliament return on Monday, something Anthony Albanese has already ruled out. We call on the Prime Minister today, at the end of Shabbat, when it ends tonight, to sit down with the Opposition Leader, Susan Lee, take up her invitation and work out terms of reference that properly will deal with the issues through a Commonwealth Royal Commission. Instead... On Monday, I will reconvene the Cabinet here in Canberra to continue the work that we are doing. But before that, the Prime Minister will return to Bondi tomorrow for the National Day of Reflection a week on from the attack, after attending a service at the Great Synagogue in Sydney last night.
