Callum Ward, a foundational player for Greater Western Sydney, has announced his retirement from the AFL following a serious ACL injury sustained earlier in the season. Ward, who joined the Giants from the Western Bulldogs in 2012, is the club's games record holder and has played 327 AFL matches in total.

Ward expressed disappointment at not being able to compete for a premiership in his final year, but reflected positively on his career and the challenges of helping to establish AFL in Western Sydney. His contributions are recognized as instrumental in growing the sport in the region.

Callum Ward's been the heart and soul of this club, been the absolute cornerstone of what we've been able to build over the last 14, 15 years. This year was meant to be Callum Ward's final shot at a flag, but that fateful night in May against the Tigers changed everything. I don't want to be the prophet of doom, but that's where you grab when your ACL's in. I knew I'd done it straight away, I knew I'd do my ACL. I guess in the moment I was counting down the weeks until the grand final thinking can I get back and I knew I couldn't. A dream that will now remain just that. It's the way footy goes sometimes, so I've had a good crack at it, I've tried my best. This was the extra year that we agreed upon last year to have another crack at it and it wasn't meant to be for me. 327 AFL games isn't bad though, the 35 year old is also the Giants games record holder with 267 after moving here in 2012 from the Western Bulldogs. I'm so glad I made the leap at the time, I didn't want to do it to be honest. I did it and one of the main reasons was I wanted to grow up and start fresh and challenge myself. And he was challenged. In Western Sydney people didn't even know what AFL was, so really building AFL and getting people's understanding of what AFL was was the biggest challenge.
