Heather, Alex, two bills and one constitutional amendment making their way through committees today. Outside the hearings, people lined up to voice their opinions. Inside, lawmakers argued, yelled, and battled over this redistricting plan. Don't sit here and play games. We know what's at stake. Excuse me, we're gonna... Hey! Hey! I'm asking for... We're gonna stop this right now. Tempers flare in Sacramento as legislation for the redistricting ballot measure moves through committees. California Republicans blasted Democrats for a lack of transparency in the expedited time frame. This is about transparency and that you want fairness in this. Republicans proposed amendments to the bills that would prevent any member who voted to approve the maps from running for Congress. If everybody here is saying that they are doing this to protect democracy, to do it, to make sure that they don't have a vested interest. Republicans also questioned the cost of a special election amid the state's budget deficit. Do I think that we should spend $200 million for the opportunity to avoid billions of dollars in Republican hits to our budget? I absolutely do, and I'm curious to see if voters will agree with me. Good morning, JP Hanna with the California Nurses Association in strong support. Sophia Carstens, Decentralize America, and on behalf of the LA County GOP, strongly opposed. Elections committees in the State Senate and Assembly heard public comment from a handful of supporters and dozens of opponents to the partisan redistricting plan. They also invited expert witnesses, including members of the First Citizens Redistricting Commission, who opposed Democrats' efforts. Despite the serious attacks against our democracy, we cannot preserve it by torching its fundamental tenet that voters choose their representatives, not the other way around. And a current member of the Independent Commission who supports the governor's plans. These are extreme attacks on our core democratic principles, and these attacks must be met with decisive action. This is a flagrant violation of the people's rights under the Constitution of California, rights that were instituted by the people on their legislature to restrain it. State Republicans are also suing to stop this week's votes, asking the California Supreme Court to slow down the process, accusing Democrats of violating a constitutional requirement to have a 30-day review period for new bills. Gavin Newsom has no problem taking away people's voices. He has no problem violating rules, violating laws to push through with this. Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas released a statement in response, writing in part, Republicans filed this lawsuit to stop Californians from voting. That's anti-American and anti-Democratic. In this election, Californians can stop Donald Trump's assault on our state by voting yes. Now, with a tight timeline, California Republicans are asking for the state Supreme Court to rule by tomorrow, and a 30-day review period would prevent the legislature from moving on the redistricting bills until September 18th.
