Flooding at Sydney's Downing Centre forced the evacuation of hundreds of people, including prisoners held in basement cells, after water inundated the underground levels and an electrical substation. The incident caused significant power outages, impacting approximately 860 customers across five city blocks, including businesses, office towers, and apartment buildings. 

The Downing Centre court complex will remain closed for several days as repairs are carried out, creating a backlog for the state's busiest courthouse. Nearby cafes and restaurants also experienced power cuts, and traffic disruptions are expected while water-damaged roads are repaired.

Castle Ray Street was blocked by emergency services just after 9.30am as an underground electrical substation was inundated. There's been flooding to the underground levels of the Downing Centre court complex. There's also been some loss of power. Prisoners being held in basement cells were also evacuated minutes after court proceedings had begun. I don't think it's looking good. Someone wanted an adjournment very clearly. I'm not going to get involved in that. That's a conspiracy there. Throwing out lawyers' busy schedules. No objections from me. Power was also cut to cafes and restaurants nearby. Lots of money just going down the drain, so anyway, what do you do? Ausgrid says the outage impacted 860 customers stretching across five blocks of the CBD. Businesses, office towers and apartment blocks in the dark for hours. All the levels, no power, no lights, no lifts, no water supply because our pump stations are offline. In what's the state's busiest courthouse, today's events have no doubt created a backlog and a logistical headache for the system. The Downing Centre will be out of action until the end of the week at least, while traffic will be disrupted by repair works to the water-damaged road. Sarah Navin, 410 News First.
