Despite the national ban and government warnings, the mayor emphasized that neither freedom nor love can be banned in Budapest. The city will collaborate with organizers to hold the event, marking the 30th anniversary of Pride in Budapest, without requiring permits from authorities. The government has not yet commented on the mayor's announcement.

The law allows police to ban LGBTQ marches, and lets police use facial recognition cameras to identify people who attend. Orban's government has recently ramped up its campaign against the LGBTQ community to police Fidesz voters who believe Hungary's Christian identity is being threatened by what they call gender and LGBT ideology. Lawmakers have said the march ban was needed to protect children. And after it passed, Orban said organizers should not even bother organizing pride in Budapest this year, the 30th anniversary of the event in the city. Karacsony said the city would team up with organizers to plan the June 28th event, and that the march will be a municipal event celebrating freedom. Therefore, he said, no permits from authorities would be needed. A government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
