Bridge collapse raises concern about America's infrastructure

The National Transportation Safety Board's investigation of the Fern Hollow disaster found a failure to maintain the steel on the bridge played a critical role. This bridge didn't collapse just by an act of God. It collapsed because of a lack of maintenance and repair. The agency's findings led the Federal Highway Administration to order every state in the country to examine the condition of their uncoated weathering steel bridges. Our own investigation found that out of more than 10,000 of them across the U.S., at least 251 of the bridges are in need of major repair or replacement. Our data team found New York has the most, followed by Michigan. We visited one of them in the city of Flint, which carries 63,000 vehicles every day. We are underneath that bridge right now. We can hear the highway traffic above us, and we can see some of the reasons that this bridge is in poor condition, including this cracked concrete over here and these temporary steel support beams that have been in place since 2015. Inspection reports we obtained for another uncoated steel bridge in Flint reveal cracks and weakened bearings going back five years. Why have those areas not been addressed? It gets back to resources. Becky Curtis is the chief bridge engineer at Michigan's Department of Transportation. She says a lack of funding, combined with inflation, are making it impossible to keep up with an expanding list of deteriorating bridges in her state, including those made from uncoated steel, where maintenance is so important. We know we don't have the resources to address all of them, and that's why we're seeing a decline in our condition over time. We're losing ground. Obviously, the big question is, are these bridges actually safe? And Curtis, who you just saw there, she says they do rigorous inspections. That's something we heard all across the country. If a bridge is not safe, they will maybe reduce it by a lane or even shut it down. But the fact is, there are so many of these bridges that we discovered and saw close up that are in major disrepair. We also heard from a chemist who said he was concerned about this particular material for decades, decades before that Fern Hollow collapse.
