Katrina Moore from South Brisbane endured decades of undiagnosed pain before being diagnosed with endometriosis in her early 40s. After researching treatment options, she began receiving Botox injections for pelvic pain through a local clinic, experiencing substantial relief that lasts several months per treatment.

The minimally invasive procedure, performed under general anaesthetic, targets deep pelvic floor muscles and can be complemented by physiotherapy to extend pain-free periods. Some patients require only a single injection, and Moore reports a significant improvement in her quality of life, including the ability to sleep without severe pain.

For decades, Katrina Moore suffered intense pain. Time after time, her symptoms went undiagnosed. You're missing family events, you're missing catching up with friends, you're... It impacts your career. Katrina says at times she felt medically gaslit by doctors. The fatigue, the pain and all that was kind of like, oh, either I was working too hard or I should meditate more and things like that, maybe rather than be taken seriously. At times, the pain was so severe, the financial planner was bedridden for 12 months. It wasn't until her early 40s when Katrina was medically diagnosed with endometriosis. After tiresome research, she discovered Botox injections for pelvic pain were available through MARTA. She'd previously had success with injections for jaw pain. I probably have about three or four months because I get it done every six months. Three or four months of just, yeah, it's just good. Like, it's just... Yeah, just breathe again, it feels like. The procedure requires day surgery and patients can see results within weeks. We do these under general anaesthetic. We do target some deep pelvic floor muscles, namely the obturator and ternerus muscles, so it is quite uncomfortable and we do a little pudendal block for some pain relief afterwards. The effects of the injections generally last around three to six months, but if patients undertake pelvic floor physiotherapy, they can live pain-free for more than a year. And there will be plenty of my patients who have only had one Botox injection so far. For Katrina, it's now all about getting back to life. Just being able to hop in bed and go to sleep at night without being in severe pain, or the pain keeping you awake or having to take, you know, handfuls of drugs to get through the night, just makes a big difference.
