Ontario Premier Doug Ford and the border workers' union have both called for greater federal investment in border security, citing shortages in patrol officers and equipment. The Stronger Borders Act, which aims to enhance border security, is currently before the Senate, and Ottawa has pledged $1.3 billion to address these issues.

Marilyn Gladue says the unwatched border is a big concern. It's not patrolled formally. You have the Coast Guard available if there's a concern expressed, but otherwise, you know, there are very small amounts of resources we have to call London or Windsor to get any support from the RCMP here. In 2018, the RCMP closed an office in Sarnia, leaving a hole. Now we bought a helicopter for this region. In Windsor this week, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he's doing his part, dedicating a helicopter to Windsor police and stationing hundreds of officers at the borders in Ontario. Ford says it's the federal government that needs to step up. It was a previous Prime Minister that weren't funding border agencies, the Canadian Border Agency, properly. They're short thousands of patrol officers. And the Union for Border Workers agrees, saying it's been promised resources that haven't arrived. I mean, we have marine units with no boat. We have one in Niagara that actually is called the dock crew because they really don't have a boat to use. It's not a very good situation in a lot of places. And the union says CBSA officers should be encouraged to handle illegal crossings rather than relying on the RCMP. We have the full legal authority to do it. We just want to be in a position where, you know, we can be part of that solution. The Stronger Borders Act is currently before the Senate. It promises to beef up border security.
