We begin tonight with new orders for border patrol agents to stop deporting migrants under President Trump's asylum ban, which he signed earlier this year. The directive comes after a federal court limited the president's order last week. CBS's immigration reporter, Camilo Montoya Galvez, joins me now. So Camilo, take us through this here. Explain the country's asylum policy and what the court order on Friday said. Sure. Well, Maurice, U.S. asylum law, going back to 1980, gives migrants physically on American soil the right to request humanitarian protection, even if they enter the country illegally. But when President Trump took office for a second time earlier in the year, he suspended that right and closed down the American asylum system through a proclamation. And that policy allowed border officials to just turn people away to Mexico or to their home countries without allowing them to request asylum on the grounds that the country was facing an invasion, according to the president, under the Biden administration. But now a federal court has said, Maurice, that this proclamation cannot completely disregard and ignore U.S. legal obligations to protect people fleeing persecution under domestic and international law. And so now we are told that Customs and Border Protection officials have been ordered to halt deportations specifically under this policy. Impressive. You can remember that level of detail. I got to tell you. But at the same time here, people still seeking asylum can still be deported. Is that not true? Yes. And I think that's an important point to underscore. People who are entering the country illegally will continue to face deportation and arrest and detention and potentially criminal prosecution. But that will be in accordance to U.S. immigration law, which also allows them to seek asylum and humanitarian protection to try to prevent that deportation from happening. OK. So the administration has also had setbacks in the immigration agenda. How does all of this tie together? Well, look, the administration has made very aggressive immigration moves, and many of them have been blocked in court, including a recent effort to have ICE go into courthouses across the country to arrest people who are attending and showing up to hearings that the government told them to attend. But they have also been given some legal victories, including by the Supreme Court, which has been very deferential to the administration on this issue and has allowed them, for example, to end the humanitarian protections of hundreds of thousands of people from Venezuela. But there have been some significant setbacks, including on those courthouse arrest policies. This is by no means over. No.
